6 Guidelines to Crafting a Compelling Text Message that Will Engage Your Customers

Text Message Marketing
Do you feel like you are blending in with your competitors in marketing and looking for something that will set you apart? Utilizing text message marketing can provide your business with a competitive edge. Being the most widely used and frequently used app, texting can help your business from a deeper, more personal relationship with your customers. This tool can be valuable in many industries when used properly.  Check out our 6 guidelines when crafting a text to your subscribers.

1. Be brief.

With SMS text messages, you only have 160 characters to deliver your message. Think about when you're reading your text messages - are you reading with undivided attention? Chances are you are multitasking as they pop up at work or when you are out and about.  So, it is best that you keep your message short, sweet, and to the point. Keep the core of your message in the beginning, because it will appear in the preview.

2. Be relevant.

The last thing your customer wants is another way in which spam cam infiltrate their lives.  Know your audience so you can provide them with valuable information and offers.  It’s beneficial in text message marketing to segment your mailing list, as to create focused clientele groups.

3. Create a sense of urgency.

If you leave the offer open ended, chances are your audience will forget. One example of great text message marketing is for restaurants sending out a text for open tables. People will want to respond right away so they can secure their spot before someone else snags it. No matter what industry you are in, it is best to have redemption window of 48 hours so you are not overlooked.

4. Be timely.

Send your message at times when when you know actions are most likely to be taken.  A shopping deal can be sent during lunch breaks, after work hours, or the weekends, dining deals during meal times, or whatever time best compliments your offer or information. In the same fashion, be aware of how frequently you are sending messages so it does not become a turn-off.

5. Give a call-to-action.

There's no need to get caught up in being too creative here. Keep your message crystal clear and encourage the customer to “shop now” or “show text to redeem.”  Simplicity can go a long way here.

6. It's all about branding.

Because you will not be coming into your audience’s phone as a contact, make sure that it is clear who you are right away.  Include your name or brand to avoid any possible confusion.

The Difference Between Social Media and Social Networking
Social media and social networking are two marketing tools with overlap that can often be hard to decipher.  Their content, community, and timing styles are different and can be utilized as a marketing tool for your business in different situations.

Social Media is a way to share content and industry expertise to a large audience.  It’s one thing to be on social media, but it’s another thing to actually use it to your advantage. You must be active, not passive.  First steps are to set up your profile, gain a following and post content.  Social media is a valuable tool, as it is a public way to have a relationship with customers. While there are times when you should engage in conversation with your followers, social media is your chance to do the talking. You want your content to be engaging and provide value to your followers. Share photos, articles, videos and infographics that will hook your followers, create buzz and promote your brand.  If you are active and truly using social media, you can schedule posts ahead of time so you don’t have to take time to craft a post every day.

Social Networking is an opportunity to connect with people of the same interests, hobbies, fields of study or line of work within the framework of social networking. Two-way conversation is a fundamental part of this network. The content of these conversations are deep and informative, and there is no pre-scheduling for this content, as each interaction should be thoughtful and unique. Here, relationships are fostered through community.  This takes time, patience and good listening skills.

In business, everyone is looking for return--what is social media doing for me? Is social networking worth the investment?  As social networking is a direct connection and thus the rate of investment is more clear.  If you are boosting your social networking and you see sales go up, they are most likely attributed.  With social media, it’s more difficult to measure, as the purpose is to gain the attention of your audience. Effectively positioning your business on the right social media platforms will help you create appropriate relationships to grow your business.

Sales Content vs. Marketing Content: The Difference and How They Can Complement Each Other

Sales Marketing versus Content Marketing
When publishing content on social media, a website, blog, in emails, or text messages it’s easy to get caught up in the ultimate goal of business—sales.  It would be easy to directly ask customers to buy your product or sign up for your service, but there is power in subtlety and a little charm. Understand the difference between sales content and marketing content and how you can strategically use them both to market your business.

Content Marketing

A little charm will go along way. Content marketing is not the place to boast about how great your company, products or services are. This type of content tells your story, your values, vision, perspective, and builds your credibility and trust. Slow and steady wins the race. Thinking long term and weave the voice of your brand into your content. Overtime you will sell people without having to directly come out and say what you are selling.

Sales Marketing

Highlight statistics that will set you apart. Confidently share awards, sales, education, staffing and special service.  The right areas to shine the spotlight on will be different for every business. Convince your audience that you are the answer and that you are the one they want to work with.

Putting them together.

Content marketing is a great tool used to build relationships with current and future customers.  When individuals continue to see your content marketing appearing in their news feeds or inboxes, they will get a sense for who you are and what you do.  You then can pair this strategy with sales marketing and seal the deal.  If you use strong content marketing, your sales marketing won’t need to be pushy. Your prospects will connect with your content and feel confident in partnering with you.

Infographics and Digital Marketing
Infographics are a form of visual communication that tell a story.  Information displayed through graphics, as the name suggests, has seen higher levels of engagement and increases the likelihood that viewers share content. According to LewisPR, “image-rich content gets 94% more views than content without relevant images.” So, what are you waiting for? Understand which type of infographics best tell the story and convey the messages of your organization.

Basic Infographics

Basic infographics includes data, copy, and visuals.

Data Visuals

Data visuals are most often used to make sense of numbers or big sets of data and are displayed differently depending on the context of the information.  They can be as simple as charts and graphs but are often more complex and artistic.

Informative Designs

Informative designs create a visual for a concept - one you may be familiar with is the food pyramid. Also under this category are designs like timelines, how-to, processes, and hierarchical displays.

Editorial Graphics

Editorial graphics include pie charts, maps, bar, and line graphs. These are best used when explaining a topic with many moving pieces.  Often times it combines a variety of different information and data from many unique sources so the viewer can see all the components of a larger idea. All the forms of basic infographics are great compliments to an article or blog post.  They can also be helpful to visually tell the story of your business’s services in digital marketing.

Animated Infographics

Animated infographics walk side by side with your customer as your message unfolds before their eyes. While they can not control what happens in the infographic, the graphic guides your customer step by step through the ideas you are trying to convey.  This storytelling tool is taken to the next level in an interactive infographic as the viewer takes control of their experience.  With just a click or scroll, they become part of the graphic and are in charge of their learning.

Infographics are a compelling and innovative way to capture your customer's attention. Whether used in your digital marketing or simply to accompany a blog post, you are bound to see a higher level of customer engagement.
